4 Signs You Have A Broken Water Line/Pipe

Posted on

Broken water lines are some of the emergency plumbing issues you may be faced with in your home. The worst thing about broken water lines is that they are not always detectable especially for pipes outside your home or behind your walls, flooring, ceilings, etc. In fact, you may only notice that you have a problem when the damage has already been done. However, if you're keen enough, you'll be able to know that you may have broken water lines way before the issue develops into something more serious. To do that, here are some of the signs you should watch out for.

1. Reduced Water Pressure

A sudden drop in water pressure is one of the most common signs of a broken water line. That's because a leak in your water lines means some of the pressure will be lost too. Therefore, the water will flow at a relatively lower pressure than usual. Keep in mind that other plumbing issues such as clogs can also reduce the pressure of water reaching your faucets. Nevertheless, whatever the cause of the low water pressure is, you need to contact a plumber as soon as possible for the necessary repairs to be made early enough.

2. Water Discolouration

Have you noticed a sudden change in the quality and colour of your water? Is it brown or contaminated with various particles? You could be dealing with a broken water line somewhere in your plumbing system. Broken water lines, especially those outside your home can allow the soil and other materials underground to find their way into your plumbing system and to your faucets. If you're connected to the public water supply system, find out if any maintenance work is going on. Sometimes it could be the reason your water is discoloured. Otherwise, you should call your plumber immediately because chances are you have a broken water line.

3. Swampy/Soggy Lawn

Unless it's been raining, a swampy or soggy lawn is usually an indicator of a broken water line. Therefore, watch out for unexplainable pools of water in your yard. A broken water line underneath could be leaking the water.

4. Unusual Sounds from Your Plumbing Fixtures

Listen out for strange sounds from your plumbing fixtures such as your toilets and sinks. Bubbling noises from such fixtures are some of the sounds you should be keen to identify. If you have a broken water line, flushing your toilet or running water down your sink will often produce bubbling sounds. The sounds are usually created by air that is unable to escape to your sewer lines.
