Three Causes For Blocked Drains That You Need A Plumber To Solve

Posted on

Blocked drains are exceptionally frustrating to deal with. Sometimes the problem can be fixed by you, like when it is a bit of hair or some grime build-up in the pipes. Many people still prefer to call in plumbers just in case they disrupt something while cleaning out the blocked drains. However, in several cases, the reason for a blocked drain is much more serious, and in those instances, you have no choice but to get the experts in to fix the mess before it gets worse.

Broken Pipes

For one reason or another, pipes are constantly breaking. Often it is simply due to the fact that the plumbing is very, very old, but sometimes it is due to actions you might have accidentally taken without realising. When you hear the sound of free-flowing water or notice wet spots in your flooring or out in the garden, then you should immediately turn your water supply off and call for a plumber. Broken pipes can cause blocked drains to overflow with sewage and make your whole home's plumbing unusable. This is perhaps the most serious cause of a blocked drain and something you should always be wary of.

Sediment Build-Up

Over time and with a constant amount of water always flowing through your drains, a type of sediment will form around the inside of your pipes. This sediment is natural and impossible to stop, and for much of your life, it will not have any impact on your drainage or water flow. However, eventually, this sediment build-up will become too much, and when that happens it will start to slow your drainage and cause blockages far easier. If you notice your drains getting blocked more frequently, it could be because of sediment, and you should get the problem checked out by a professional.

Plant Intrusion

Not many people know this, but many root systems from your regular garden plants are strong enough to penetrate your plumbing given enough time. If you notice your water bill becoming exceptionally high and your water taking longer to drain in the shower and bath, then you might have a problem with roots blocking your drain. This commonly requires that section of plumbing to be replaced, and if it's not dealt with early, the root system can infiltrate even more and cost thousands extra. It also means that your sewage could be leaking into your garden, which is exceptionally unsanitary and can cause terrible smells. Don't put up with bad smells and slow drainage; call a plumber and get blocked drains fixed as soon as possible.
