Some Simple Maintenance Tasks for Your Water Pump

Posted on

Water pumps have a variety of uses in industry and agriculture, and should work effectively without any problems for a long time. To keep your water pump working efficiently for as long as possible, there are a few things you can do to keep it well maintained.

Inspect it regularly

Firstly, don't leave your water pump in the hope that it will look after itself. Make sure you give it a regular inspection to make sure it is working properly. Look out for any leaks in the pump and make sure that the motor is working correctly. You should also check for any blockages and signs of wear on the pump. If you find any problems, don't hesitate to have it serviced or repaired.

Clean the filter

Secondly, make sure that the filter on the pump is cleaned regularly. This stops solid particles from passing through into the water, but if they build up on the filter itself it will stop the water from running through the pump properly. A clogged pump will not operate efficiently, so make sure the filter remains clean to keep out any debris or sediment that could put too great a strain on it.

Maintain it properly

Thirdly, make sure that any recommended maintenance tasks are carried out at appropriate intervals. You can do this by hiring a professional servicing company. Otherwise, the manufacturer's guidelines will tell you which tasks you can do yourself. This could include inspecting and replacing belts, lubricating the bearings and replacing filters. Don't be tempted to make repairs that are not recommended for the public though, and don't carry out any tasks if you aren't confident about your abilities.

Store it correctly

Finally, make sure that you store the pump properly if you have to put it away over winter. The pump will need a thorough cleaning first and should be completely dry to avoid any damage in storage. Any removable parts should be detached and stored separately, and you should store them indoors if possible to protect them from the weather. If your pump needs to stay out over winter, consider getting a cover for it to stop it from freezing.

You should not experience any problems with your water pump if you look after it. For further advice on how to keep it properly maintained, just talk to your supplier or installer who will be happy to answer any questions.
